Not like the endless shallow questions, he’d been asked for 25 years. I think, because Dan realized that, the questions I was asking him were refreshing and made him excited. We spent about an hour together, starting out by talking first. One of the self-indulging perks of doing radio. That is how I came up with the list of songs to talk to him about. I just began to tap them from my mind onto paper. I made a list of my favorite Dan Fogelberg songs, without the aid of any of his albums lying in front of me. Because that meant I could ask him about any song I wanted! It was his 25th anniversary tour and he had just released a 4 CD retrospective box set, so that was good.

In this case, the interview was set up before a concert. Q: Could you tell us about your relationship with Dan Fogelberg, during his life?Ī: My relationship with Dan was like everyone else’s, a fan! However, one of the magical things that happen on really good radio is that you get a chance to sit down with artists that you really admire. Having him provide the insight, for the first time, about what he was going through at the time of creating these 13 great songs chosen for the interview.

Therefore, the reason I pro duced this CD is that I want to connect listeners with the part of Dan t hat they never knew.

What he did for music and radio is equal to the way he pers onally touches the hearts of each of his fans. Dan has always been one of the cornerstones of what great radio was built on. Most of that is lost in the current state of music. Q: What is the main reason you have produced this biographical CD?Ī: My radio program, FM Odyssey, was created 18 years ago as a way to preserve the fundamental style of the FM radio I grew up listening to, that can hardly be found anymore.Ī time when people picked up an instrument or wrote a song because they had something to say not because they wanted to become rock stars. Now, go back and listen to it!ĭan Fogelberg - Same Old Lang Syne (Live - 2003) For all the years I spent listening to that song, feeling in my mind, the refreshing breeze coming down the side of the Colorado Rocky's, it wasn't until Dan told me that the song was actually about making the choice of living or suicide. A perfect example is the title track of his album N ether lands. Sometimes you "get it" right away and other times it ta kes a while to sink in. His songs created a visual landscape, as well as a heart and m ind connection. Many listeners share that commonality with him because their journey is similar. Q: Can you try to describe the impact of Dan Fogelberg's message through his music?Ī: Dan's music was a soundtrack to his own life, in a way. A daunting task that many in the music industry aren’t able to do This allowed him to keep his family life and the music business separate. Why did I buy this version? Probably because of his untimely death during the holidays when Same Old Lang Syne was playing repeatedly, and the desire to get a little more familiar with the works of a great singer songwriter.Q: Who was the man behind Dan Fogelberg's music?Ī: In my opinion, Dan was a very private person who used his music to socialize with the world. You get more the feeling he's performing right there in your living room. For example, on "Longer" you can hear him pluck each guitar note. So what is the difference between ESSENTIAL and his older GREATEST HITS? The mix on this new release is a bit crisper, maybe a little more weighted to his voice and guitar. On ESSENTIAL you also get Dan's cover of the old Cascades' song "Rhythm of the Rain", slower than most versions, and "Run for the Roses" a nice smooth ballad. Of course, all of Dan's top 40 tunes are on this CD as well. When the local radio stations switch to Christmas music, this is one of their most requested songs. However "Same Old Lang Syne" has become an established holiday classic. "Longer", often heard at weddings, is nice, and "Leader of the Band" is also familiar. Most casual followers of modern soft rock will be familiar with 3 of the tunes on this CD, and these are well worth purchasing the disc.
